Nestled in the heart of San Leandro, Fat Fish stands out as a vibrant gem in the world of Japanese and Asian cuisine. This sushi restaurant delivers a delightful blend of traditional flavors and modern twists, inviting diners to indulge in an authentic yet innovative sushi experience. Whether you're craving delicate sushi rolls, hearty ramen, or flavorful bento boxes, Fat Fish’s extensive menu caters to every palate with a careful balance of freshness and bold taste.
From the first bite, you'll appreciate the quality and thoughtfulness in each dish. Popular menu highlights like the Sticky Rice and the inventive Sushi Rolls—including crowd favorites such as the Volcano Roll, Lion King Roll, and Godzilla Roll—are crafted to tempt your taste buds with rich layers of flavor. The Teriyaki Chicken Combo, paired with miso soup and salad, offers a comforting and satisfying meal, while the spicy seafood soups and ramen bowls bring a warming and robust depth that sushi lovers and soup aficionados alike will cherish.
Fat Fish also takes your dining experience to the next level with their smart dining technology—a self-ordering tablet at each table ensures a smooth, quick ordering process that doesn’t interrupt your meal flow. This tech-forward approach has impressed many, allowing guests to customize orders effortlessly, from adding extra unagi or cream cheese in rolls to supplementing bentos with extra meat or rice.
The atmosphere at Fat Fish is casual yet lively, occupying a space with a storied past but transformed into a welcoming and modern spot perfect for family dinners, friendly gatherings, or solo sushi adventures. Customers often praise the generous portions; rolls are impressively large and deeply satisfying, giving excellent value without compromising taste. The Lion King Roll, in particular, has won loyal fans for its rich, possibly real-crab filling—a detail that sets Fat Fish apart from many others serving imitation crab.
Feedback from longtime patrons further underscores the restaurant’s appeal. Regulars rave about consistency, especially with the veggie and vegan rolls, lauding both the price point and the fresh ingredients. The Tofu Steak and various specially crafted veggie rolls prove that Fat Fish is just as dedicated to plant-based options as they are to traditional fish and meats. Even diners who have moved away from the Bay Area make it a point to return, a testament to the compelling flavor and quality found here.
Service is often described as friendly and efficient. While some have noted a minor hiccup with the virtual ordering system's billing transparency, these moments are rare and overshadowed by the overall enjoyable experience—fast service, attentive staff, and delicious meals every time. Many appreciate that despite the robotic ease of the ordering kiosk, the warmth and authenticity of the food keep the dining experience deeply human and satisfying.
In short, Fat Fish is more than just a sushi joint. It’s a culinary hub where quality meets innovation, affordability meets generosity, and tradition meets technology. A spot where every roll feels like a celebration, every bowl of ramen a comforting embrace, and every visit leaves you eager for the next. If you find yourself in San Leandro craving bold Japanese flavors with a modern, value-driven edge, Fat Fish is a must-visit destination.

The prices are fair and mostly affordable. The food was good and the service was good as well. If you're dining in, you order from a tablet on your table. This makes it quick and easy to order food. It's actually quite neat. I like the automation tbh. I'll definitely be back with my friends and family. The "Lion a King" was delicious. I think they might have used real crab instead of imitation crab, but I could be wrong. I will definitely ask next time. The teriyaki beef bento box was just the right portions. Nothing special stood out other than that. It was basically the same flavor and textures as other beef bento boxes in the area. The beef was a little tough and could have been better. But, for the price, it wasn't bad at all.
Stopped by for lunch at 2pm and plenty of seating inside. I used the self order kiosk on the table, which made ordering a breeze. The sushi rolls came out in about 8-10 minutes and they were huge rolls. I typically eat two, but I coule barely finish these. They were incredibly filling and each roll was less than $12, which is a great deal in 2024. Service was excellentand I really enjoyed the meal. I get work done on my car across the street often, so i'll be stopping by whenever i'm in the area from now on.
Been coming here for years off of a recommendation. The number 69 is always a hit with me. The dumplings that we tried for the first time were fried a little too hard for our liking but the flavor was otherwise good. They have a new virtual ordering system if you dine in that we didn't prefer which overcharged our party and didn't reflect on the receipt but otherwise this place is usually a hit with the family
Been here years ago & was surprised at how great the service & food was (for being in an Old Taco Bell building, lol). Haven't eaten their food in years since I wasn't in the area as often. Ordered a nice big dinner for the house today (2 teens & 2 adults) and was joyfully surprised at the fast service, EXCELLENT food and all around experience. Definitely will be going more often after tonight's delicious food & happy faces (on teenagers, no less).
Love this place have been coming here for years and the rolls are consistently good, especially the veggie/vegan rolls. Prices are amazing for what you get. We got the tofu steak, avocado roll, mushroom roll, avocado mushroom roll, veggie lover roll, and veggie king roll. Even though I don't live in the bay area anymore this is a must on my list when I do.
We had various types of Sushi all excellent! We also had the chicken teriyaki and Beef Teriyaki both were a good amount of food. This has been my wife's favorite sushi spot in San Leandro for as long as she can remember. So we definitely made it a point to stop by here when we were in town. Definitely a must try 10/10
